Why Evolution Is True

Alert reader Chris has called to my attention the existence of a site that plots where radio-tagged great white sharks are (Carcharodon carcharias). It’s the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker, and if you go there you’ll see a map like this:

Picture 1

All the sharks appear to be great whites, and the color of the dots tells you how long ago the location was recorded (orange: 72 hrs.; green: less than 30 days; blue: more than 30 days). Each shark is identified individually and has a name, so you can follow a single one around.

Pity there aren’t many dots, but at least if you’re in Virginia, Georgia, or southeast Africa, you’ll know to stay out of the water.

Looking up these beasts, it appears that their reputation as human-killers is largely undeserved, since we’re not really good fudz for these beasts. Most bites appear to be “test bites”…

you can be a believer in science and God or whatever one chooses to believe in.

Why Evolution Is True

Well, as reader Diane G. told me when she sent me this link, “Don’t get your hopes up.” And indeed, although, as the Washington Post reports, the Jesuit-run Regis College at the University of Toronto is starting a new course, “Responding to 21st-Century Atheism,” it isn’t all it appears to be. (Why are Jesuits running a college at the University of Toronto, anyway?)

It’s an attempt, says the Rev. Scott Lewis, for people of faith to understand and come to terms with the increasingly muscular secularism and atheism that has arisen in Western societies over the past generation.

Atheism “has become militant, aggressive and proselytizing,” said Lewis, a Jesuit scripture scholar, who teaches the class with three other scholars. “It’s made great in-roads and is now socially acceptable. If you’re young and educated and believe in God, you’re (seen as) a jerk.”

When I read that second sentence, my…

Why Evolution Is True

Too true!

UPDATE:  Judging from the first few comments, I don’t think readers quite get what is going on here.  Ergo, I append the sheet music for the normal rendition:

Oh, and Beyonce’s version of the Star-Spangled Banner that I liked during the Inauguration? Lip-synched!

LET’S PASS THIS AROUND AND SEND HER ON THAT SHOPPING SPREE.

Becky, 11

Leukemia

“I wish to go on a shopping spree!”

At only 11-years old, and diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia, this young girl was nothing short of beauty and hope. Her wish was to go on a shopping spree. In true Make-A-Wish fashion, Becky was taken in a personal limousine along with family and friends to a local mall where she picked out several stores to make her selections.

From the moment she arrived, nothing could wipe the smile from her face. But even more than all the goodies she acquired that day was a lifetime of memories she was able to share with her family and close friends. It was a priceless wish.

As she climbed back inside her limousine with a joyous laugh, a tired sigh, and a special sparkle in her eye, she was elated as she headed home.

Becky had received her one true wish! She…

great article, very well written and some great points.

Embedded in America

Let’s face it, an armed society is going to have shootings. Any quick internet search will turn up shootings in every country in which guns are present. This is simply fact. At the same time, there are armed countries – like Canada – where shootings are rare. Canadians are armed, no doubt, it’s just they don’t use their arms on their neighbors or their schools or family members. At least, not like us Americans do. The Swiss are armed too – literally millions of Swiss men have – get this – fully automatic weapons in their homes. In fact, nearly every Swiss man does. Same’s true of a few other northern European countries.

With notable exceptions, these countries experience few shootings.

So what is it about Americans and America that ends up with armed (legal or otherwise) citizens shooting each other?

There’s two questions posed in the title: Gun Control…

Mom, I’m Too Fat……

I was watching the Today show this morning and a woman was on as a guest discussing the issues that she has faced as a mother with an obese child. I found it very intriguing that people would even consider her tactics as taboo. She is a mother who is trying to do what is best for her daughter. Not because our society sees beautiful as the runway models but because she wants her child to be healthy. I am the mother of 3 boys and 1 girl, luckily my children do not have the problem of obesity. My 12 year old son has made many comments that he needs to be on a diet, he wants to eat our lean cuisines and drink our protein shakes. Of course, I don’t let him, his body is still growing and he is in that “awkward stage” that most boys go through. My daughter who is 5 makes comments like, “mommy, can I wear make-up to school because my friends are mean to me” this is heart breaking and I want to accomodate her but, I have to tread carefully because she needs self confidence without the opinions of others. As I originally said, I am very lucky that my kids are healthy and slim but, if I were in the situation that the other mother was in, I would do the same thing. Not for the opinions of others but because my children need to be healthy. They need to live a healthy lifestyle and think about the consequenses of over indulging in food. I try to break it down for them any time that I can, we limit their sweets and try to buy things that are not sweetened with sugar but maybe a substitute or sugar free. It is our resposibility as parents to keep our children healthy and this applies to weight too. I think that every parent should do what she did. It is not wrong to have your child diet or eat more healthy. Dieting is not wrong if you do it the right way.

Exactly!….I have the same problem and I was turned away in my Paramedic uniform because I didn’t have my driver’s license on me. Paramedics are allowed to carry controlled substances on trucks but can’t buy medicine containing pseudoephedrine? Give me a break. I agree with what you said. Put some in all weapons.

Once upon a time I had allergies and when I went to the doctor he prescribed Claritin-D and it was like a wonder drug. It cleared my nose up and I was able to breathe again and since he gave me a prescription for it and I had a prescription plan through my work it was relatively inexpensive. Then it was announced that Claritin-D would be available over the counter and that I would no longer need a prescription and that this would be wonderful news for allergy sufferers all across America because we would no longer have to see a doctor in order to obtain the drug. Of course now I had to pay full price for Claritin-D and it was much more expensive but at least it was still available.

Then one day I went to purchase my monthly supply of Claritin-D and it was nowhere to be…

Bottle of the White House’s Beer Fetches $1,200 at Charity Auction

NewsFeed

Brad Magerkurth, a beer aficionado and salesman, happened to passing through Knoxville, Iowa, just as President Obama swung through the swing state last August. Magerkurth met Obama during a campaign stop at a local coffee shop and bonded with the Commander in Chief over the President’s specially brewed beer — and was surprised when Obama presented him with a bottle of his very own.

(MOREWhat Kind of Beer Is Served at the White House?)

The White House Honey Ale is one of four varieties brewed by the White House and was the first style created when Obama decided to purchase a brewing kit back in January 2011. In addition to the honey ale, a blond ale, honey porter and honey brown are all brewed, bottled and labeled on-site. (Even the honey is reportedly collected from beehives off the White House’s South Lawn.)

“I was pretty ecstatic,”…
