Why Evolution Is True

Alert reader Chris has called to my attention the existence of a site that plots where radio-tagged great white sharks are (Carcharodon carcharias). It’s the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker, and if you go there you’ll see a map like this:

Picture 1

All the sharks appear to be great whites, and the color of the dots tells you how long ago the location was recorded (orange: 72 hrs.; green: less than 30 days; blue: more than 30 days). Each shark is identified individually and has a name, so you can follow a single one around.

Pity there aren’t many dots, but at least if you’re in Virginia, Georgia, or southeast Africa, you’ll know to stay out of the water.

Looking up these beasts, it appears that their reputation as human-killers is largely undeserved, since we’re not really good fudz for these beasts. Most bites appear to be “test bites”…

you can be a believer in science and God or whatever one chooses to believe in.

Why Evolution Is True

Well, as reader Diane G. told me when she sent me this link, “Don’t get your hopes up.” And indeed, although, as the Washington Post reports, the Jesuit-run Regis College at the University of Toronto is starting a new course, “Responding to 21st-Century Atheism,” it isn’t all it appears to be. (Why are Jesuits running a college at the University of Toronto, anyway?)

It’s an attempt, says the Rev. Scott Lewis, for people of faith to understand and come to terms with the increasingly muscular secularism and atheism that has arisen in Western societies over the past generation.

Atheism “has become militant, aggressive and proselytizing,” said Lewis, a Jesuit scripture scholar, who teaches the class with three other scholars. “It’s made great in-roads and is now socially acceptable. If you’re young and educated and believe in God, you’re (seen as) a jerk.”

When I read that second sentence, my…

LOCAL: 40 Grams of Heroin Seized by State Troopers in Richland County

This is certainly close to home for me. I used to live in Richland County.

Heroin Seized

MANSFIELD, OH (WOIO) –

An Ohio man is facing felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized approximately 40 grams of heroin, worth nearly $6,000 following a traffic stop in Richland County.

Troopers stopped a 1986 GMC Sierra pick-up truck, with Ohio registration, to investigate a warrant violation on State Route 13 northbound, near milepost 13, at 11:34 a.m. on January 6. The owner-driver of the vehicle was arrested on an outstanding warrant. A search incident to arrest revealed 225 balloons of suspected heroin.

The driver, Shawn A. Schiffer, 41, of Shelby, was incarcerated in the Richland County Jail and charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, a first-degree felony. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine.

Racism 101: Are Hispanics: The New Race?

One day in class a young African American student raised his hand and asked a question.

“Mr. Picone, I just don’t understand it. Why are white people afraid of me?”

“What do you mean?” I said.

“Wherever I go, whenever I see a white person or they see me, they always look scared and afraid. I don’t get it. What did I do?”

One of the things that can make being a teacher so difficult is that we don’t always have the answers to questions that students ask, even though we want to have those answers. It’s been over 30 years now and I still don’t have the answer to that students question…and I still wish I did.

Teachers know that when it comes to life, there is always more to learn and perhaps one of the most confusing and complicated problems in…

The Beauty Bee

— are they really worth it? Some people still think that buying makeup online is more of a hassle than a convenience. I would agree to some extent, but the frequency at which I’ve been buying from Multiply shops or otherwise hasn’t abated at all. I suppose the pros just outweigh the cons for me. Let’s run through those real quick, beginning with the cons:

Cons of online makeup shopping:

Cargo.jpg

  • No swatching. Some retailers will provide photos of swatches, but there are some products that you just have to see against your own skin to be sure. The Cargo powder pictured above (from Stuff in Style) is really great and finely milled, but I picked out shade 30 which is just a shade too light
  • The inability to swatch leads to long hours of research about the quality of a product online — which, to some, can be enjoyable…

Army Of Awesome People

Funerals are generally thought of as glum and solemn affairs, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. Here are some things you can try to make your own funeral fun with a little planning. (Disclaimer: DO NOT attempt to make someone else’s funeral fun without prior consent, as some people’s ghosts have no sense of humor.)
1) Put a “Please Do Not disturb sign” on the side of the coffin.Rental-1
2) Place nearby a glass box with a wooden stake in it, with sign “Break Glass In Case Of Emergency”
3) Attach a Romney/Ryan 2012 bumper sticker to the coffin.
4) Send out an automated e-mail to all invited guests with an apology that you will not be able to attend due to a scheduling conflict.
5) Wear pajamas in the coffin. I mean, this is clearly not the best of all possible occasions, so why not save…

A Bucket List……No I’m not dying.

WELL, I am a 32 year old mother of 4 wonderful children. I am lucky to have a loving husband and we are healthy. I have had the magnificent pleasure of being able to do many things in my life but as many people do, I often dream of the things that I haven’t done. As I am sitting here looking at this computer screen, I start to think…. Maybe I should make a Bucket list. Not a long one, because that would be unrealistic but a well thought out and reachable one. I have decided to give myself a few things. This is not a list that has to be reached within a certain amount of time but just things that I want to either accomplish or enjoy. This is difficult because I don’t want to just whimsically come up with silly items, how do I think of only 25 things that are possibly within my grasp?

1. Take a Honeymoon
2. Learn to Surf
3. Get my Pre-baby body back
4. See the 7 wonders
5. Write a book that is really worth reading
6. Shop in New York
7. Meet the members of Aerosmith(my favorite band)
8. Own a Salon
9. Become Fluent in Spanish
10. Live abroad for a while
11. Have a clean house. ha ha
12. Make sure that my Husband knows that I truly love him
13. learn how to meditate
14. do something for the good
15. Be in a position to donate to charity
16. Donate my time and skills to people in underdeveloped countries
17. SCUBA dive
18. Sky Dive
19. have a successful garden
20. learn to sew
21. Wake up early enough to get my kids to school without rushing
22. have a successful blog
23. Learn about computers
24. Learn the piano again
25. Really make a difference in the life of a stranger

Omg, it was really hard to come up with this list. I thought that it would be easy but, what do we really want out of life? I don’t think that we ever know until we start to examine ourselves and the life that we have already live. I know that I have goals but some seem to be unreachable, others seem too easy. This is my Bucket List and I know that I can definitely accomplish them but who knows when, doesn’t matter as long as I keep striving to reach them.

Legislation passed by the Senate on Tuesday night as part of the effort to avoid the dreaded “fiscal cliff” will limit the amount wealthy people can claim for charitable deductions on their taxes. The cap will apply only to individuals who make 250 thousand dollars or more and married couples making $300,000 or more, and It could save the government up to 50 billion dollars in tax breaks.

And now in response rich folks are apparently up in arms claiming that if they can’t deduct all of their charitable gifts they may not be so charitable in the future. Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary under President George W. Bush, tweeted: “This deal limits my deductions so I, & many others, will likely donate less in 2013.”

So why give if the giving can’t get you something good? That’s the exact opposite of what it means to be…
